A blind author struggles to connect with his humanoid assistant.

Short Film | 20 Minutes | Drama

Why the 4:3 aspect ratio?

It was important for us to represent the scope of the world a blind person would experience. Limiting the field of view not only creates a sense of longing and nostalgia but puts us within the Man’s limited perspective.

Why did you decide to shoot black and white?

That was actually a decision made in post. We shot with this wonderful Angenieux and utilizing black and white brought out the qualities of this lens and created a dialogue between our modern digital capture and black and white films of the mid-century.

How was it creating the blind character?

Really that was all T’ai. I had written this character with him in mind, so we had plenty of time to talk and discover. We discussed the limitations and behaviors a blind person would inhibit and specifically for Man, we wanted him to be newly blind. So, he is not fully adept at utilizing his other senses. In that regard, T’ai ran with it and created a fragile character just between sight and non-sight.

Finding and casting Mel?

We held many auditions trying to find the right Mel. She needed to be robotic, but also personable. She couldn’t have any major defining facial characteristics that would humanize her, and must be able to command incredible control over her own movements and speech. With Jenna, we couldn’t have found a more perfect fit. From Austria, her accent is perfectly foreign yet familiar enough we cannot place it’s origin. She sent in a tape and our searching ended there.

Crafting the visual style?

We ran into interesting challenges, a blind person has no need for lights, so we had to stay away from any unnatural light sources and opted to shoot entirely with natural light. We also wanted to create a timeless and untouched feel to the film, and the villa-styled home, along with a very spartan selection of furniture helped complete this feel.

Is this in the future? When does this take place?

We didn’t want a “30 years in the future” vibe, technology is so diverse and innovative today that we felt this could take place in our current or alternate present. Combining old computers, and limiting current tech trends like social media and smartphones, we hoped to create a place that felt somewhat frozen in time.

What do you hope the audience takes away from the film?

We don’t strive for anyone to leave with a particular resolution. I don’t view this film as providing any answers but maybe producing questions and ideas. I would hope that the audience is inspired to dissect their own desires and longings as well as the nature of their connection to the things around them.
